The process of researching a novel has its own amusements, says Louise Doughty
There is a pleasing game you can play if you are a novelist researching a book. It’s called Annoy the Librarian.
You don’t have to be a novelist to play it, of course. Small boys are very good at it, and little old ladies who want to know what that book is called – you know, the one that was on the telly, with the blue colour, written by the woman with the hairdo. Novelists, however, have the edge. We get more practice.
The easiest way to annoy a librarian is, of course, to request a book. This is particularly true if the book you would like to see is in any way historical or obscure.
